Stewart Lang Prather, age 79 of Taylorsville (formerly of New Castle), passed away on Monday, January 6, 2025, at Baptist Health Hospital in Louisville. Son of the late Reginald “Rex” and Ellene (Stewart) Prather, he was a US Army Veteran & Counter Intel Agent, obtaining the National Defense Service Medal. He received his BA from the University of KY where he was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. He received a JD Law Degree from the University of Louisville. Stewart was an attorney for Middleton and Reutlinger for over 12 years, then worked for Rice Insurance Services Company, LLC until his retirement. He was a member of New Castle First Baptist Church before moving to Louisville, where he joined Highland Presbyterian Church and then Christ Church United Methodist.
Stewart was an excellent storyteller, and his stories will live on through the family, friends and especially grandchildren who loved them, particularly Grand Daddy Stewart’s “The Wild Dog Story!” He loved racing sports cars and had been involved in the Louisville and Lexington Sports Car Clubs; he liked to relay the story that he once beat Paul Newman in a road race! Stewart learned woodworking from his dad, and was proud to have helped build the display case for the restored clock in the Henry County Courthouse. He was a lifelong member of the Louisville Bicycle Club where he had served as President, V.P. of Advocacy, and created their signature fund raising ride, the "OKHT," which still occurs annually. He served for many years as a troop leader with the Boy Scouts Troop 1 of Louisville. He was proud to serve on the Board for the Kentucky School for the Blind. In his later years he attended Rock Steady Boxing, liked watching his dog, Cole, run agility courses, and enjoyed dinner and beer with his friends on Monday nights. He followed NASCAR, and his biggest smiles seem to come on the days he drove go-karts at Kart Kountry with his grandkids.
He will be greatly missed by his loved ones, grandchildren, nieces & nephews, as well as a wide circle of friends in the bicycling community, Rock Steady Boxing and Dog School of Louisville. Stewart was preceded in death by a sister, Marty Stahl, and a brother, Don Thomas Prather.
